One of the most iconic names in esports plans to hang up his mouse and keyboard in just a couple of months, according to multiple sources close to the player. Martin ''Rekkles'' Larsson, starting AD carry for European League Championship Series outfit Fnatic, will likely soon call time on an illustrious playing career spanning almost three years.
Larsson is a member of Fnatic, currently one of the strongest teams in Europe and in a prime position to fight for World Championships 2016. Sources close to the player say that he has been thinking about retirement for a while, but decided to make a push for one more international appearance before calling it quits, and the results in the last World Championships pushed this decision.
Larsson seemingly plans to follow the footsteps of several other legacy League of Legends professionals who stepped out of the spotlight to focus on their own lives or other directions. Fellow Swedish and long-time rival Jakob "YamatoCannon" Mebdi ended his playing career to grow as a coach and analyst, now working for Team Roccat and occasionally LoL analyst.
In North America, players Jang-sik "Lustboy" Ham and Marcus "Dyrus" Hill stepped down from their respective teams to take other positions or just leave space for the upcoming talents.
Larsson was a member of the very first team to take take the record when his Fnatic lineup went undefeated in the 2015 summer split. That was the start of a long and successful year with Fnatic. The team would go on to be one of the most successful in European history, only challenged by Origen and H2K.
As the LCS season is about to start, the team has not yet held any tryouts or approached players as a potential replacement for Larsson. But sources say that the team has an eye on former Fnatic player Steeelback for their possible replacement, with H2K ad carry Konstantinos "FORG1VEN" Tzortziou and Origen player Jesper "Niels" Svenningsen the subjects of special attention. The two phenoms are considered to be among the best in LCS, and both will be eligible to join Fnatic before the Summer Split in 2016.
