Sony Communication Networks (So-net) announced on the 25th their "Portable TV" contents transmission service that provides files that can be played on the Playstation Portable (PSP). The service will launch in July 27th. At the service's launch, about 100 titles will be available free of charge, ranging from movie previews, sports, and music to Korean drama and anime.

"Portable TV" is a service that transmits files to the Memory Stick inside of a PSP, where the video files are in the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format -- the playback of this format is supported on the PSP. At the "Playstation Meeting 2005" held on July 21st, Sony Computer Entertainment disclosed plans regarding the addition of H.264 playback support to the PSP, and gave an outline of this Portable TV service.

Of most note with this service is the fact that it transmits video in the H.264 format. Though the service is not strictly "PSP-only," because the only portable device that can currently play H.264 from a Memory Stick is the PSP, it is substantially a PSP-only service. The company said, "we'll let you know when other devices that support the service come to be, in a special announcement."

The videos that are transmitted conform to the Memory Stick Video Format, and the audio is in AAC. The resolution of the video is 320 x 240. To download files in the future, users will take advantage of the internet access function provided by the PSP itself, access the Portable TV website, and download files to their Memory Stick -- but for the time being, users access the So-net page with their PC, and download files to their Memory Stick with use of a USB connection to their PSP.

However, movie files cannot be saved to the computer's hard drive; files can only be saved to the Memory Stick inside of the PSP. Video files cannot be moved to the PC's hard drive or to a different player once saved to the Memory Stick.

Those able to use the service are members of So-net Broadband, or members of the free "So-net Contents Course." Users from other providers can of course join the "So-net Contents Course."

The service will start on July 27th. Free downloads will begin from the same day. Furthermore, the company plans to introduce rental-style pay downloads in the future, where contents can only be played during a predetermined time period; when this will happen is unknown, and the price will be "in the hundreds of yen" (So-net). Because the file size of a 30 minute video is around 256MB, it is recommended that users use a 512MB or above Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo.

Planned contents, their genres, and providers are listed below:

Planned contents genres
-Movie (Short movie, previews, documentaries)
-Music (Music clips, documentaries)
-Drama (Korean drama, short dramas)
-Anime
-Entertainment (comedy, variety, idol)
-Information (cooking, pet, travelling, language learning, etc.)
-Sports
-Advertisements
-Other

Remarcar que dice claramente "Because the file size of a 30 minute video is around 256MB, it is recommended that users use a 512MB or above Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo."

"#3 owned #2"

Y resulta que:

"Sony Communication Networks (So-net) announced on the 25th their "Portable TV" contents transmission service that provides files that can be played on the Playstation Portable (PSP)."

Y por cierto, Tele=Distancia Vision=Vision.

Television=Tele a distancia.

However, movie files cannot be saved to the computer's hard drive; files can only be saved to the Memory Stick inside of the PSP. Video files cannot be moved to the PC's hard drive or to a different player once saved to the Memory Stick.

Sony has dropped another firmware, but this one has some nice teeth. Firmware 2.50 comes with a bunch of web upgrades, but most importantly it includes LocationFree Player support.

"The LFA-PK1 LocationFree® Player Pak gives you the ability to view live TV, recorded TV (via DVR), VHS tapes or DVDs from your home to your computer over a broadband internet connection. The Player Pak includes the LocationFree base station and easy to install LocationFree Player for PC… You can enjoy your TV and favorite A/V content virtually anywhere. "

The major downside is that a LocationFree Base Station is required and when I checked last night they were selling for $350. Lets hope they come out with some cheaper PSP version, because that’s friggin ridiculous.

When I went through the set-up on the PSP (after downloading the firmware it will be located above your web browser icon) it said that the setting will prepare for “viewing TV at home.” No mention of roaming television viewing, so who knows.
